Surviving EducationWhat happened in my early school years set me up for what happened to me as a school teacher. The abuse never ended. My story starts in the beginning and end of education. As a child growing up I witnessed the hardships that my mother, who at the time, was an educator went through. She experienced a series of violence from students, and lack of support from schools. I also underwent my own struggles in school that caused me to feel unsafe. I was inspired in wanting to serve the greater good for people by being a teacher. I assumed that if I was a teacher with my own creative vision of curriculum that I would have empowered students. As I was a teacher I’ve encountered the very thing that my mother encountered. I witnessed what coworkers went through. I also witnessed mistreatment that goes on towards students. As I’ve experienced both sides of being a student and teacher who underwent school violence and lack of education infrastructure, it made me realize that schools have a triage of issues that need to be addressed. A list of issues includes staff shortages, budget cuts, hiring qualifications, and limited resources. From the beginning to the end, readers will understand and may relate to experiences of being a teacher or student in today’s education climate. All stories written in this book are real life experiences that were gathered and shared by individuals including myself who were victims of the education system. 35 or 36 were experiences of my own, 2 or 3 my mother’s, the rest former co-workers, and other individuals that were willing to share. One extreme is told from a student’s perspective. Another extreme is told from a teacher’s perspective. No voice is greater than the other. My book is intended to reveal the ins and outs of violence that goes on in schools and how it impacts us all. I hope it will not be viewed as bashing education rather to take back our power so that we as a nation can do better for our teachers and students. Read more
