St Wihtburh

Youngest daughter of Onna; Abbess of Dereham, Norfolk; died and buried at Dereham 743 [17th March]; exhumed in 798 and reburied in adjacent church (ASC 798); forcibly translated to Ely, 974.

Her original burial place in Dereham churchyard is still revered as a holy well and a modern commemorative arch over the High Street celebrates a scene from a half-forgotten legend of St Wihtburh.

Holkham Church, Norfolk, set on prominent wooded hill in Holkham Park, is dedicated to St Wihtburh.

Her emblem in church art is the hind or doe.
