Sutton Hoo and the Staffordshire Hoard

Following recent discoveries, many people will be asking, is Sutton Hoo still unique? From the starting point of the Mound One ship-burial, these lectures will look at the Prittlewell burial from Essex and the recent hoard of more than 1,500 Anglo-Saxon objects found in Staffordshire. How have they impacted our understanding of Anglo-Saxon England in this period?

  10.15 Introduction to Sutton Hoo, Prittlewell, & the Staffordshire hoard (Dr Angela Care Evans) A review of Sutton Hoo Mound 1 and Prittlewell for those who are already familiar with these burials and a brief introduction for newcomers to the subject. Progress report on the objects from the Staffordshire hoard, the distribution of types and some early theories.

  11.45 Garnet cloisonné at Sutton Hoo (Dr Noël Adams) Garnet sources, the techniques of manufacturing cloisonné and different styles of cellwork will be reviewed. How does the Sutton Hoo garnet cloisonné fit into the continental and now the Anglo-Saxon picture?

  14:00 What can Sutton Hoo Mound 1 and the Staffordshire hoard tell us? (Dr Noël Adams) The fundamental differences between a hoard and burial are obvious, but this lecture considers some of the implications of the high status objects (such as the purse lid and shoulder clasps) present at Sutton Hoo and not in the Staffordshire hoard, which has its own unique object types.

  15:15 The picture emerging from Treasure finds (Dr Angela Care Evans) Dr Evans will look at not only what is known of the Staffordshire hoard so far (many objects are still being cleaned) but also other recent metal detector finds, particularly of sword mounts (pommels, pyramids, etc.) on which she has been working.

About Dr Angela Care Evans and Dr Noël Adams

Dr Angela Care Evans, retired curator of early Anglo-Saxon antiquities at the British Museum, excavated at Sutton Hoo, was a contributing author and editor of the British Museum monographs on Mound 1. She is working on the publication of the finds from the Bromeswell cemetery (the most recent excavations on the National Trust site) and completing her catalogue of Anglo-Saxon sword fittings.

Dr Noël Adams, a specialist in garnet cloisonné, is Adjunct Curator at the J. Pierpont Morgan Library in New York, where she is preparing a catalogue of the Thaw collection of Early Medieval antiquities. She publishes regularly in the field and has recently co-edited the papers from a symposium on Byzantine Jewellery held at the British Museum in 2008.
