Sutton Hoo Studies

2011-2012 Wednesday Morning Seminars at Sutton Hoo 

An exploration of the artistic and technical wonders found aboard the great ship-burial berthed beneath Mound One at Sutton Hoo, in the light of Old English poetry, literature, history, art, and landscape studies. We shall also consider my editions and translations of pertinent Old English and related texts. 

 Seminars are held at the National Trust Visitors' Centre at Sutton Hoo, usually in the Old (squash) Court, just across the parade ground from the car park.

11th Jan.  
18th Jan. This week we shall continue to look at the royal helm and its ultimate late Roman, Byzantine, and Ostrogothic background. Copies of texts for discussion include the Old English Boethius and the genealogy of the late Roman and Byzantine emperors.

Each seminar usually runs from 10.30-13.00 and normally costs £15 [plus £1.50 for coffees and biscuits ].
